Beach, the sea, luxury yachts and polo – the Viareggio Polo Beach Cup – Versilia Tuscany once again united this unbeatable combination in a polo event with a very special atmosphere. Over three days the chukkas on sand were held at the renowned beach resort “Lido di Camaiore” in Italy, near the Park Hotel Villa Ariston.
The unique location at the coast of Versilia, situated in the north-west of Tuscany, offered the guests the opportunity to enjoy the fast paced polo matches in front of the magnificent backdrop of the Mediterranean Sea with a view to the luxury yachts of title sponsor Fipa Group. Four teams with players from Great Britain, Argentina, Switzerland and Italy competed against each other in the seventh edition of the tournament. Polo label La Martina, the leading outfitter in the sport of polo, was official supplier of the tournament. Dr. Patricia Lencioni, president of the Viareggio Beach Polo Club, was once again responsible for the organisation of the tournament. She ensured the event to run smoothly and the polo guests from all over the world were delighted with the tournament. Representatives of Miami Beach Polo and the International Polo Club in Wellington Palm Beach, Florida, of Jodhpur, India, as well as of the Hublot Polo Cup Ascona in Switzerland and Polo Club Croatia were present and congratulated the organisers on the successful event.
In the final on Sunday, which was accompanied by bright sunshine and watched by many spectators, the last year’s winners, Matteo Beffa (-1) and Cedric Schweri (0) from Switzerland with Argentinian pro Martin Riglos (+4), of the team of title sponsor Fipa Group, encountered team Park Hotel Villa Ariston, consisting of Edward Foxon (+1), Oscar Carona (+2) and Andrew Foxon (0). The match, which took place under the watchful eye of the referee Benjamin Pollejo, was exciting until the end. Finally, team Fipa Group won by 3-1.5 against team Park Hotel Villa Ariston. On the previous day the trio of team Fipa Group had already shown its will to win and defeated team Engel & Völkers clearly by 9-1.
In the match for third place team Engel & Völkers, including Gary Pike (+1), Federico Ferraresi (+1) and Denis Venturato (+2), competed with team Dr. Vranjes, consisting of Peter Elser (+1), Marcos Antinori (+4) and Raimondo Visconti di Modrone (-1), and fought for victory. The trio of team Dr. Vranjes emerged victorious and won the match by 5-2.
On Saturday and Sunday a sailing regatta under the motto “Sailing Polo” was held parallel to the polo matches directly on the coast in the background of the polo field to combine the two sports with each other. Thus the guests were entertained by the highly competitive polo matches on shore and competitions between the sailing yachts on the water.
At the award ceremony the players and guests witnessed the famous Italian singer Andrea Bocelli presenting the trophy to Matteo Beffa, Cedric Schweri and Martin Riglos of winning team Fipa Group. He expressed his enthusiasm for this event and the good work of the organizer, Dr. Patrizia Lencioni, highlighting the importance of initiatives which promotes polo, and in general the equitation world. The Argentinian pro Martin Riglos received the Goelador Cup as top scorer of the tournament. He showed a great performance throughout the whole tournament and led his team to victory for the second year in a row. His horse Concecita was named Best Playing Pony. The “Fair Play” award was given to Gary Pike, captain of team Engel & Völkers.
After the huge success in the previous year, Fipa Group decided to bring this year’s edition of the Viareggio Polo Beach Cup – Versilia Tuscany to Lido di Camaiore. The Italian Fipa Group is one of the international leading producers of yachts and is fully committed as a sponsor to the sport of polo all over the world. The headquarters of the company are located in the city of Viareggio, where the first five editions of the Polo Beach Cup were held. In the past year the location of the tournament changed to Lido di Camaiore, located about five kilometres in the north of Viareggio.
The gala dinner on Saturday evening was about the good cause: Money was collected in the context of a charity auction, the winner received a Cartier watch provided by official Rolex retailer Sergio Capone from Pisa. The gains of the auction were donated to the “Andrea Bocelli Foundation“, which helps children in need in Haiti. The evening was attended by distinguished guests such as designer Ermanno Scervino, founder of the famous same-named fashion label, and Patrizia Gucci, ex-wife of Maurizio Gucci.
The two commentators Gianluca Magini and Jan-Erik Franck took care of providing an amusing presentation of the matches. Gianluca Magini of Roma Polo Club is connected to the tournament from its inception: He participated in the first three editions of the tournament himself as a player and since 2012 he accompanies the matches on the sidelines as commentator, this time with Jan-Erick Franck at his side. Gianluca Magini: “The final was a very exciting match! Each player played very well, but Martin Riglos finally made the difference. We saw good polo during the whole tournament and it was a very nice show for all the people who came to see the matches. We had a great time and were lucky with the weather, as the sun was shining on Sunday just in time for the final matches. The seventh edition was the best of all since the beginning of the tournament!”
