A tragic death is shocking the polo world: A few days ago the South African exceptionally gifted polo player Sibusiso “Sbu“ Duma was killed in Lidgetton. The +3-scorer on the way to a big polo career in England was stabbed.
Investigations are still continuing. The presumable perpetrator is said to be the boyfriend of Duma’s ex-girlfriend, which he had a relationship with two years ago. The same ex-girlfriend was also attacked by her boyfriend and is in the hospital with severe injuries.
Clive Peddle, Executive Director of South African Polo Association: „Our thoughts and prayers are with Duma’s family and Dieter and Josie Rowe Setz who were a big part in Sbus life. “Sbu was a shining example for all of us with his enthusiasm and love for polo.” The murder of Sbu Duma is causing consternation in Germany, too. Wolfgang Kailling, president of the Lower-Saxony Polo Club: “Just before Christmas I had played with him. Sbu Duma, the short strong dark man in the middle of the white titans of South Africa, was an excellent rider, talented with the ball and a man with a perpetual positive attitude. I want to describe him as “everybody’s darling”. We laughed so much and had fun. He was just as soft off the field, as he was tough on the field. A real role model, an exceptionally gifted player.”
