Last Friday we received the sad news about the death of the Argentinian polo player, Javier Novillo Astrada, who was 38 years old. He fought against his brain tumour with strength and courage until the end. Javier, who was Eduardo Novillo Astrada’ son, Eduardo, Miguel, Ignacio, Alejandro and Verónica’s brother and Manuel, Simón, Nina and Clara’s father, leaves an immense void after his death.
His passion for horses started when he was a child. He soon was interested in polo and became an excellent player. He won a great number of titles as a polo player, both in Argentina and in foreign countries (Spain, United Kingdom and USA, among others). It is important to highlight the fact that he achieved the Triple Corona title in 2003 together with his three brothers, a victory that became a milestone: it was the first team formed by four brothers to win the most important polo championships in Argentina during the same season: Tortugas Open, Hurlingham and Palermo.
Javier got his +9 handicap in 1999 and he maintained this position during 13 consecutive years, until it went down to +8 in 2012.
The passing of Javier Novillo Astrada, an outstanding polo player and cherished human being, means a great loss for the great family of polo. Our deepest sympathies and our most sincere condolences for his family and loved ones.
