On 22nd November, the new polo season 2014/2015 at Malta Polo Club took off with the King of Spain Cup. Under the patronage of Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, President of Malta, the event was held in support of the national charity event L-Istrina 2014 for Malta’s Community Chest Fund.

Two teams competed against each other and fought for the King of Spain Cup. At the end of the second chukka, team Jeep with the fourteen-year-old up-and-coming polo talent Miles Lockwood was in the lead, but in the end team L’Istrina was successful and won the game.

The match was followed by a champagne reception for the 200 invited guests and dignitaries, including Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, patroness of the event and President of Malta.

The Malta Polo Club was established in 1868, a fact which qualifies the club as the oldest in Europe and the second oldest in the world, following Calcutta Polo Club. As in its founding years, the club is still located in Marsa. The polo season in Malta Polo Club starts in October and ends in June. Highlight is the Cawnpore Cup with eight teams taking part, which is held since 1901. The King of Spain Cup was held for the first time in 1928 in honour of the Spanish King Alfonso XIII.
