Last Saturday the two rival polo teams Ellerstina, including the Pieres brothers Facundo (+10), Gonzalo (+10) and Nicolás (+9) as well as their cousin Pablo (+10), and La Dolfina, consisting of the four ten goalers Adolfo Cambiaso, David Stirling, Pablo Mac Donough and Juan Martín Nero, met in the final of the 2015 Hurlingham Open at Hurlingham Club in Hurlingham, Buenos Aires Province and engaged in one of the most exciting final matches of the 122-year-old history of the tournament.

For La Dolfina there was a lot at stake in this match: In case of a victory, the foursome would have made the next step towards their third victory (as in 2013 and 2014) at the Argentine Triple Crown. In case of a defeat this dream would have receded into the distance. Right from the beginning Ellerstina showed a strong desire to win and took the lead very quickly. At the end of the second chukka the Pieres family was headed of La Dolfina by 5-3 and at the end of the fifth chukka had increased this lead up to 12-8. But in the sixth chukka La Dolfina mobilized all reserves and made up leeway. In the eight and final chukka the foursome scored four goals and by this took the lead. In the end, La Dolfina won by a narrow margin, 15-14.

Adolfo Cambiaso was top scorer of the match by scoring eight goals, but his teammate David Stirling was named Most Valuable Player due to outstanding performance.

By winning the final of the Hurlingham Open, La Dolfina now has the chance to win the Argentine Triple Crown for the third time in a row. Until today, no team has accomplished this feat. The Argentine Triple Crown consists of the three Opens Tortugas Open, Hurlingham Open and Argentine Open and is a series of the most important tournaments worldwide. In the final of the 2015 Tortugas Open, which was held on 17th October, La Dolfina had managed to defeat Ellerstina as well.

The Argentine Open will start on 20th November, the final will take place on 12th December at the world-famous “Cathedral of Polo” in Palermo, Buenos Aires. With its performance in the final of the Hurlingham Open Ellerstina Polo Team has proven that it can be reckoned on as a strong opponent and that it will everything until the end. This year’s Argentine Open, the most important polo tournament of the year, will guarantee exciting matches, that’s for sure!
