On Sunday, 7th June, the Greenwich Polo Club, located in the U.S. state Connecticut, started its polo season with an exhibition match for Hole in the Wall Gang (Paul Newman’s Charity), including some players who will participate in the Monty Waterbury Cup tournament. The exhibition match saw team White Birch, formed by Santino Magrini (0), Hilario Ulloa (+9), Mariano Aguerre (+9) and Peter Brant (+2), beat Airstream with Peter Orthwein (0), Guillermo Aguero (+6), Michel Dorignac (+6) and Mariano Gonzalez (+7) by 10-7. Michel Dorignac was named Most Valuable Player and Mezquiete from Hilario Ulloa was awarded Best Playing Pony. The event also had a Tesla run against rider and player Joaquin Panelo (+4), who almost managed to win the Tesla car with his horse, Picolina.
Next Sunday, 14th June, the 20-goal Monty Waterbury Cup tournament will continue at Greenwich Polo Club, with team Shreve, Crump & Low, formed by Christopher Brant (+1), Kris Kampsen (+6), Matias Magrini (+8) and Joaquin Panelo (+4), fighting against team Airstream with Peter Orthwein (0), Guillermo Aguero (+6), Michel Dorignac (+6) and Mariano Gonzalez (+7).
This tournament is named after James “Monty” Waterbury, a 10-goal player with an illustrious career who, back in his days, held the distinction of being the best scorer the game had ever seen. He won the first U.S. Open in 1904 and is best remembered as a member of the “Big Four”, the U.S. team that won five Westchester Cup over Great Britain between 1909 and 1914.
