UAE Polo is the champion of the Julius Baer Gold Cup 2016 after defeating Mahra in a great final by 10-7 at the Dubai Polo & Equestrian Club. With a superb teamwork performance, patron HH Sheika Maitha’s team achieved a deserved victory to win the most important polo trophy in the Middle East for the first time.
The Julius Baer Gold Cup 2016 goes to the UAE Polo Team that now joins Mahra, Abu Dhabi, Habtoor Polo, Ghantoot and Zedan in the winning list of the trophy, after 7 years of great success.
UAE Polo showed from the very beginning their intentions to win the final match and started at a great level. With Lucas Monteverde leading his team from the back and teenager Jack Hyde scoring each opportunity they had, UAE achieved a five goal lead with only seven minutes to go. In the last chukka, Mahra battled hard to get back in the game but HH Sheika Maitha’s team controlled the game for a final victory by 10-7.
Lucas Monteverde was named Most Valuable Player of the Julius Gold Cup final and Asesora, the mare played by Jack Hyde, was awarded Best Playing Pony. The Argentine Breeders Polo Ponies Association also awarded Dolfina Divina played by Lucas Monteverde.
The Bentley Cup Final had Julius Baer Team by Habtoor Polo as the new winner after defeating Abu Dhabi in the final by 8-7. The match was held at the Dubai Polo & Equestrian Club before the final of the Julius Baer Gold Cup and Julius Baer had a great performance against a tough Abu Dhabi Polo Team.
About Julius Baer Gold Cup (Dubai Open)
The Julius Baer Gold Cup (Dubai Open), the UAE’s premier polo tournament and an 18-goal handicap competition, is part of the Gold Cup Series. The event is held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai. The tournament, played under HPA rules, is now in its seventh year. It has grown significantly since inception.
