On the past weekend the second round of preliminary matches of the U.S. Open Polo Championship was held at the International Polo Club Palm Beach, located in Wellington, Florida.
On Saturday, Dubai and White Birch repeated their success of the prior weekend and emerged victorious in their respective matches. In the first match of the day, team White Birch, including Mariano Obregon (7), Hilario Ulloa (9), Mariano Aguerre (9) and Peter Brant (1), defeated Gillian Johnston (2), Sugar Erskine (7), Julio Arellano (8) and Miguel Astrada (9) of team Coca Cola by a narrow margin, 11-10. In the second match, team Dubai, including 10-goaler Adolfo Cambiaso, playing with Rashid Albwardy (2), Alejo Taranco (6) and Facundo Sola (8), won against last year’s winners Valiente, consisting of Bob Jornayvaz (2), Santi Torres (7), Tomas Garcia del Rio (8) and Alfredo Capella (9), by 9-6.
The Sunday games at the International Polo Club Palm Beach saw Audi and Orchard Hill win their respective matches. At first team Audi, consisting of Marc Ganzi (1), Gonzalo Pieres (9), Rodrigo Andrade (9) and Freddie Mannix (7), scored their first win at this year’s U.S. Open Polo Championship by defeating team Flexjet, including Melissa Ganzi (0), Agustin Merlos (9), Sebastian Merlos (9) and Nic Roldan (8), by 11-7. Following this encounter, team Orchard Hill, including Steve van Andel (0), Facundo Pieres (10), Julian De Lussareta (6) and Juan Martin Nero (10), chalked up their second win of the tournament by winning against team Lucchese, including John Muse (0), Magoo Laprida (8), Nico Pieres (8) and 10-goaler Sapo Caset, by 11-9.
The 2016 U.S. Open Polo Championship continues on Wednesday at the International Polo Club Palm Beach. At 10.00 pm White Birch will face Dubai, followed by Valiente vs. Coca Cola at 4.00 pm.
