On 27th and 28th September, Engel & Völkers + Land Rover Polo School hosted the first youth camp in Mallorca. Eight kids and teens participated in the two-day training camp at “Son Coll”, the private finca of Christian Völkers, chairman and company founder of Engel & Völkers AG. Four of the eight participating youths (Vincent Ernst, Tizian Müller, Emil Grabosch, Paul Grabosch) had won the trip by triumphing at the end-of-course tournament of the FIP Polo Youth Camp, which was held in May at Hamburger Polo Club, and thus had been invited by Engel & Völkers + Land Rover Polo School. In addition to them, four more up-and-coming talents came to the Balearic island: the other two Grabosch brothers Michl and Anton as well as Fedora Stoldt from Hamburg and Lara Wetzel from Switzerland.
Within the two days, the young polistas experienced an intense training program including techniques of riding and hitting the ball, a study of the rules, Stick & Ball, strategy and exercises for playmaking. On Saturday evening everyone met for an asado, including the parents who had travelled with their kids. The youth camp was led by Thomas Winter (+4), the best polo player in Germany: “The kids were absolutely delighted and learned much during the weekend, especially regarding the playmaking. Unfortunately we had to cancel the end-of-course tournament due to rain. But apart from that the weather was fantastic and everyone had a very nice time. The atmosphere at Son Coll is perfect. We ate delicious food and during their leisure time the kids swam in the pool and played football.”
Christian Völkers, chairman of Engel & Völkers AG: “We are delighted that we were able to offer the opportunity, to learn the sport of polo under perfect training conditions as well as with a qualified team of coaches, to kids and teens with the first youth camp in Mallorca. The promotion of young players is very important to us and a valuable investment into the future of the sport of polo.”
Due to the great demand, Engel & Völkers + Land Rover Polo School currently plans to expand the work with young talents and wants to host more youth camp next year. Christian Völkers explains: “We want to promote kids and teens in the best possible way by constantly expanding our supply of youth camps. For the young polistas youth camps are very important, because they have the opportunity to steadily compare their current performance level to peers.”
Thomas Winter has long since shown the importance of systematic work with young talents by establishing a successful youth squad in Hamburg. He adds: “We want to establish a nationwide squad system in Germany and offer youth camps in all four regions of the DPV, the German Polo Association (North, East, West, South), which will offer regular training to kids. The best eight participants will be trained more specifically in an extra camp.”
