British Polo Day Mexico presented by Land Rover took place on Saturday, 29th November 2014 at the Balvanera Polo & Country Club, Santiago de Querétaro. The De Alba family, host of the third edition of the British Polo Day Mexico, welcomed over 800 guests, among them some of Mexico’s most influential figures in business and culture.

In the first match of the day for the The Hackett Cup, the Cordillera British Exiles took to the pitch for a closely fought battle against the host country, The C&H Mexican Polo Team. This was a thrilling match, which resulted in 12-8 victory to the home side.

Following this match, the home team – The Palacio de Hierro Balvanera – took to the pitch against The Hackett British Schools Team, both with the sought-after Land Rover Trophy in their sights. Despite some serious pressure and very fine play from both sides, The Palacio de Hierro Balvanera Polo Team were just too strong and claimed a 8-2 victory as the whistle blew at the end of the final chukka – after a fabulous and final goal by 1-goal player, Imelda de Alba.

As the sun set behind the hills surrounding the beautiful Balvanera Polo and Country Club, proceedings drew to a close with the British Polo Day Mexico prize-giving ceremony. Spectators joined the Mexican Royal Salute Brand Ambassador, Tessa Rigley in a Royal Salute Scotch Whisky toast to the victorious teams – a perfect culmination to the day’s event.

With the crowds gathered, Carols Hernandez CEO of C&H alongside Bruce James the Managing Director of Hotel Matilda then presented the trophies and prizes to the expectant winners. First up were the winners of the Hackett Cup – The C&H Mexican Polo Team – whose Captain Valerio Aguilar stepped forward to receive the trophy on behalf of his team. Up next to claim the prestigious Land Rover Trophy was Captain of The Palacio de Hierro Balvanera Polo Team, Miguel Gomez de Parada.

The Holland & Holland ‘Shot of the Day’ was awarded to Lewis Pereza of the The Palacio de Hierro Balvanera Polo Team for a terrific effort that very nearly resulted in a goal. Meanwhile, The Hackett ‘Best Playing Pony’ was awarded to the handsome Espoma. The final prize to be awarded was The Royal Salute 62 Gun Salute for the ‘Most Valuable Player’ that was rightly presented to Imelda de Alba for her stunning performance in the 4th chukka.

The third British Polo Day Mexico drew to a fun, fitting close in true Mexican style, with an incredible after-party which saw over 500 guests party into the early hours of the morning overlooking Balvanera’s beautiful lake.

Representing The British Ambassador, Christopher Maskell from UKTI (UK Trade & Investment), commented on the day: “We are delighted to have been a part of the third year at Balvanera Polo and Country Club. British Polo Day is fast emerging as a highlight of the Mexican calendar year and we are thrilled it has been another successful year with further Anglo-Mexican ties continuing to develop this excellent global polo platform”.

Host Chepo de Alba said: “I think British Polo Day Mexico is growing more and more interesting and exciting each year. The teams are so professional and today provided a very high standard of polo for all guests to enjoy. British Polo Day continues to impress me, with their huge capacity to act as an incredible marketing, political, social and philanthropic tool around the world. We look forward to see you all next year”.
